Local Footy
*Is it strong to stand up to verbal abuse and let is slide, or just plain weak to give it in the first place?*
Jake umpires in one of the local rough Tasmanian football Leagues and while I was on holiday I watched one of his games. The above thought occupied my mind the whole time as the players, partners, mums, dads, friends and children spent the entire game abusing someone or something the whole time. hmmm.
As I was waiting for him after the game I felt compelled to sum up the days experiences in a poem.
All come together for one day a week
Everyone yelling and calling out cheat
Cheer on our player who fakes for a free
The other team yell, 'he never pays that for me!'
Drink our beer with biased glasses on
Our children learn to believe we are never wrong
Scream out frustration at every mistake
Why yell abuse? Hardly a difference it will make
After the game shake hands and retreat
Plot new abuse for the next time we meet
Have a beer and send the wife home
Stay with the boys for a good bitch and moan.
cheers
